If you're using Windows Mail a recent huge Windows update caused a glitch in Windows Mail.  When you click a link in the email program the application closes. I seem to recall the link was to check for email.

It was a bit of a pain to fix. I had to go into the Power Shell to uninstall Windows Mail and the calendar.  Then go into the Microsoft store to reinstall it. If you're having that problem you're going to have to hire someone such as myself to make a house call or help you remotely. It is possible the next update may fix the problem as well. Those take a bit of time usually.
